A neuroscientist and former classroom teacher is making a case that most education ministers, tech companies, and school boards would rather not hear: the digital tools we have spent billions rolling out in classrooms are not making children smarter. If anything, they may be doing real, measurable harm.

Jared Cooney Horvath, whose work sits at the intersection of brain science and learning, has been watching the global conversation about smartphones and social media with a quiet sense of frustration. The debate, he believes, is only scratching the surface. While governments argue over banning phones in hallways and restricting TikTok for teenagers, something arguably more consequential is happening right inside the classroom, during lessons, with official approval. Screens marketed specifically as learning tools.
The Hard Truth Nobody in EdTech Wants to Say Out Loud
Horvath’s position, laid out in his book The Digital Delusion, is blunt. He writes that accepting the damage educational technology is causing may be “one of the hardest truths our generation has to face.” That is not the language of a cautious academic hedging his findings. That is a warning.
His central argument is that screens and digital tools, however well-intentioned their design, fundamentally undermine the cognitive processes through which children actually build knowledge. Learning is not a passive download. It requires struggle, repetition, memory consolidation, and attention sustained over time. Many digital tools, Horvath argues, short-circuit exactly those processes, making the experience of learning feel smoother while the actual retention and development of thinking skills quietly deteriorates.
According to Horvath’s interview with The Guardian, he is particularly concerned that children are becoming less cognitively capable as a direct result of how schools are using technology. That phrase, “less cognitively capable,” should stop any parent or policymaker cold.
This Is Not Anti-Technology. It Is Pro-Learning.
It would be easy to dismiss Horvath as another digital sceptic waving a paperback and longing for chalk dust. But his background matters here. He is not a pundit. He is a neuroscientist who has also stood at the front of a classroom. He understands both what the brain needs to learn and what it actually experiences when a child sits in front of a screen for six hours a day.
His critique is not that technology is inherently bad. It is that the way educational technology has been designed, sold, and implemented does not align with how human cognition actually works. The brain learns through effort. When a tool removes that effort, the brain adapts, and not in a good way. The skill of sustained attention, the ability to hold and manipulate information mentally, the capacity to sit with difficulty before arriving at understanding: these are not automatic. They are built through practice. And Horvath argues that screens, as currently used in most schools, are eroding that practice systematically.
What Neuroscience Says About Attention and Memory
The science here is not new, even if its application to classrooms is still being resisted. Cognitive load theory, developed by educational psychologist John Sweller, established decades ago that working memory is limited and that how information is presented dramatically affects whether it gets encoded into long-term memory. Digital interfaces, with their constant notifications, hyperlinks, interactive elements, and visual stimulation, are often designed in ways that overwhelm rather than support that encoding process.
Research on note-taking has shown, repeatedly, that students who write by hand retain and understand information more deeply than those who type. The physical act of forming letters and paraphrasing in real time forces the brain to process, not just transcribe. A laptop encourages verbatim copying. A pen and paper encourage thinking.
These are not minor differences in learning style. They represent fundamentally different cognitive experiences, and when one is systematically replaced by the other across millions of classrooms, the cumulative effect on a generation’s intellectual development is worth taking seriously.
The EdTech Industry Has a Credibility Problem
There is a reason this conversation is so difficult to have in policy circles. The educational technology industry is worth hundreds of billions of dollars globally. Governments have signed enormous contracts. Schools have rewired buildings, trained teachers, and built entire curricula around digital platforms. Admitting that the foundational premise of all that investment might be flawed requires a level of institutional honesty that is genuinely rare.
Meanwhile, the companies selling these tools have a commercial interest in framing every study that raises doubts as partial, limited, or ideologically motivated. They fund their own research. They sponsor conferences. They place their products in classrooms and call it innovation, regardless of whether it produces better outcomes.
Horvath’s voice is valuable precisely because he comes from outside that ecosystem. He is not selling a competing product. He is raising a question that the people who are selling products cannot afford to ask honestly.
The Smartphone Ban Debate Misses the Bigger Picture
Several countries have moved to restrict or ban smartphones in schools over the past couple of years, and the evidence from those early interventions has generally been positive for student wellbeing and focus. But Horvath’s concern points to something that smartphone bans do not touch: the Chromebooks, interactive whiteboards, digital textbooks, and tablet-based learning platforms that teachers are actively encouraged to use during lessons.
A child who cannot bring their phone to school can still spend most of the day staring at a screen. If the neuroscience is right, the distinction between a distraction device and a so-called learning device may matter far less than we have assumed.
What Comes Next
Horvath is not calling for schools to rip out their Wi-Fi and return to the 1970s. The conversation he wants to start is more nuanced than that, and more urgent. It is about honest evaluation. It is about asking whether the tools in classrooms are actually producing the cognitive development we say we want, or whether they are producing something that looks like engagement while quietly eroding the deeper capacities that children will need for the rest of their lives.
That is a question worth sitting with. And if the answer makes us uncomfortable, that discomfort might be exactly the right response.
So here is the question every parent, teacher, and education policymaker should be asking themselves this week: if the technology we put in classrooms was quietly making children less capable of thinking, would we actually be willing to hear it?
